Apple debuted new products and features in their “California Streaming” event that took place on Tuesday, September 14. After months of Apple dominating the headlines for antitrust legal proceedings, it was refreshing to see some exciting announcements about future Apple developments. Of course the day was not without a little worry, as Apple released an emergency update to address a security concern the previous day. More on that at the end.
Perhaps the most exciting news shared by Apple on Tuesday was the newest iPhone 13. Apple announced that the iPhone 13 alongside the Mini, Pro, and Pro Max will be available starting September 24. These new phones are packed with power and storage options that will delight tech enthusiasts everywhere.
The iPhone 13 will be available in the existing 128 GB, 256 GB and 512 GB options, but to all those users who need a lot of storage space, Apple has released a 1 TB edition. This massive storage option will start selling alongside the previously mentioned editions, however Apple didn’t reveal just how much more it will cost.
Apple’s newly designed A15 Bionic chip will power their new line of iPhones including the Mini editions. This impressive CPU may be the fastest to ever be placed into a smartphone, with 6 cores and and a 4 core GPU. Apple touted its ability to power machine learning technology such as real time video analysis.
The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max will feature an upgraded 5 core GPU which should be able to run any mobile game with ease. These higher end iPhones will also come with impressive 77 mm telephoto lens cameras with 3 times optical zoom. Combined with the Super Retina XDR display the iPhone Pro and Pro Max will be a photographer’s best friend.
In addition to the existing upgrades to the iPhone’s internals, the display will be getting a small change as well. The iconic iPhone “notch” which houses the front facing camera has been reduced in size. This will allow users to make better use of the impressive displays.
Alongside the iPhone 13, Apple announced a range of updates to the rest of their line of Apple devices. The Apple Watch Series 7 will feature a wider display with a slimmer overall design and will be made available later this fall.
The iPad 13 and iPad Mini 13 will be made available starting next week, and with the A13 Bionic chip and liquid retina display these tablets will rival most laptops in speed and performance. Additionally the iPad Mini 13 will be made 5G capable, so users can get the most out of their devices from anywhere.
Apple also announced in closing that users will be able to upgrade to the much anticipated iOS 15 starting on September 20. This is an exciting time for Apple developers, who will be able to do so much more with Apple’s App Store Connect on iOS 15. As covered in previous blogs, iOS 15 will bring with it native A/B testing in the form of Product Page Optimization and Custom Product Pages.
Additionally the new In-App Events will allow developers to engage with their users in a more meaningful way, with timely events that can be promoted in the App Store. All of these new features come with a host of new metrics that will help developers best understand what drives conversion and visibility for their apps.
Amid all of the pre-event excitement, Apple did release an urgent update patching a security loophole on iPhones. This critical vulnerability in the iMessage software allowed nefarious hackers to infiltrate a user’s phone without them needing to click any links. This loophole had been used since February to inject phones with Pegasus, a spyware that was developed for law enforcement use by an Israeli NSO.
While the NSO has maintained that they only deploy Pegasus for counterrorism purposes, it has been reported that Pegasus has been found on the phones of many reporters, journalists, and political dissidents. While it is likely not a large threat to the average consumer, users should be sure to update their phone as soon as possible to address this concern.
Apple’s first product launch since their Worldwide Developers Conference 2021 in June debuted this week. The “California Streaming” event was a vehicle to announce the newest iPhone 13 lineup, with impressive new tech and storage capabilities. The newest iPad and Apple Watch editions were also revealed with their modest upgrades. In big news for developers, the much anticipated iOS 15 software update will start rolling out on September 20, which will bring with it exciting tools to help developers make the most of App Store Connect.
